Hi, my name is Niels Waterval. I'm a researcher interested in optimizing the properties of assistive devices in order to improve physical functioning in patient populations. My PhD research (which can be downloaded here), was about optimzing ankle foot orthosis stiffness, specifically in people with calf muscle weakness. Since my dissertation I have been combining research with clinical work in the gait laboratory of the Amsterdam UMC. Implementation of precision orthotics in the clinic and gait laboratory protocols is something I'm proud of!
